چکیده

This paper presents the iRat (intelligent Rat animat technology), a robot designed for robotic and neuroscience teams as a tool for studies in navigation, embodied cognition, and neuroscience research. The rat animat has capabilities comparable to the popular standard Pioneer DX robots but is an order of magnitude smaller in size and weight. The robot‟s volume is approximately 0.08m 2 with a mass of 0.5kg and has visual, proximity, and odometry sensors, a differential drive, a 1 GHz x86 computer, and LCD navigation pad interface. To facilitate the value of the platform to a broader range of researchers, the robot uses the Player-Stage framework, and C/C++, Python, and MATLAB APIs have been tested in real time. Two studies of neural simulation for robot navigation have confirmed the rat animat‟s capabilities.

Spike-Time Robotics: A Rapid Response Circuit for a Robot that Seeks Temporally Varying Stimuli

In this paper we describe a spiking neural circuit inspired by the pyramidalinterneuron network gamma (PING) circuit modeled by Whittington and colleagues [1]. The spiking network controls a rat animat – a rodent-inspired robot that can autonomously explore and map its environment. We demonstrate how the neural controller directs the rat animat‟s movement towards temporal stimuli of the appropr...

A Navigating Rat Animat

This paper presents a new rat animat, a rat-sized bio-inspired robot platform currently being developed for embodied cognition and neuroscience research. The rodent animat is 150mm x 80mm x 70mm and has a differential drive, visual, proximity, and odometry sensors, x86 PC, and LCD interface. The rat animat has a bio-inspired rodent navigation and mapping system called RatSLAM which demonstrates...

Intelligent and Adaptive Animat Resource Trading

Trading of resources is an important sociological behaviour that is believed to be indicative of intelligent life forms, but which is non-trivial to model successfully. We have incorporated trading of resources that are critical to the survival of predator agents in a spatial predator-prey animat simulation model. We find that predator agents adapt to trade with one another in the face of extin...

Embodied induction: Learning external representations

The problem of inductive learning is hard, and| despite much work|no solution is in sight, from neural networks or other AI techniques. I suggest that inductive reasoning may be grounded in sensorimotor capacity. If an arti cial system to generalize in ways that we nd intelligent it should be appropriately embodied. This is illustrated with a network-controlled animat that learns n-parity by re...
